Hypnotherapy

Thinking of hypnotherapy?

Maybe you have heard about it, know someone who’s tried it or seen it on TV. Before deciding on whether hypnotherapy is the right solution for you it is useful to get a little background.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is an ancient technique and in one form or another can be traced back as far as records began. We agree with “Wikipedia” that hypnotherapy is “a form of psychotherapy used to create subconscious change in a patient in the form of new responses, thoughts, attitudes, behaviours or feelings.”

So how does it work?

Well this bit nobody really knows, but modern science is getting us closer to understanding brain function in general and also which specific areas of the brain are responsible for what specific activities and/or responses.

Subjects in trance like states i.e. stages of hypnosis have been monitored and it has been shown that areas of the brain respond to, and are stimulated by, suggestions during these states such that the brain literally learns new behaviours. We used to think that once we became adult the brain was “set” – can’t teach an old dog new tricks and all that – we now know this is not true.

The brain can literally re-wire itself to replace old patterns of behaviour with new ones.

What is hypnotherapy good for?

In other words what changes can be made? The list of conditions successfully treated by hypnosis is almost endless but below are a few (provided by the NHS website)

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Losing weight
  • Quitting smoking
  • Skin conditions (e.g. eczema)
  • Anxiety
  • Pregnancy & Childbirth

What should you not use hypnotherapy for?

Again the NHS website offers sound advice; “You shouldn’t use hypnotherapy if you suffer from psychosis or certain types of personality disorder…”

Some myths and misconceptions.

We have all seen the stage hypnotist at some point or other making light entertainment from volunteers in a trance state. We often get clients who have this as their only reference and are therefore concerned about what level of control they will retain when under hypnosis. We want you to be fully reassured about our use of clinical hypnotherapy and the following is not meant to make light of any concerns.

  • When you are in trance you will not be “asleep” or “unconscious”.
  • There is no “magical power” that takes your control.
  • You will not “forget everything”.
  • You will not remain in trance once the session is over.
  • You will not be taken anywhere that you do not want to go
